Washington finds a way

The NWSL’s top three teams continued to reign over the standings this weekend, with Orlando, Kansas City, and Washington all rattling off wins in the league’s return from international break.

  • Chicago, Portland, and Gotham managed to break into the win column, securing their first victories of the year while North Carolina and Utah keep searching for their first three-point performances.

  • Angel City’s unbeaten streak lives on, with the LA club earning their second straight win in a promising start for the young team.

Big picture: While they haven’t been perfect, Washington’s continued success might be the early season’s most impressive, as the team finds ways to succeed despite on onslaught of availability issues.

  • The Spirit beat Racing Louisville 2-0 on Saturday, eking out a road victory without 10 players including regular starters Croix Bethune, Casey Krueger, and Hal Hershfelt.

  • Current Golden Boot leader Ashley Hatch scored her fourth goal in as many games in the shutout, registering her 50th regular-season goal for the Spirit — the third-most for a single club in league history — in the process.

Bottom line: The start of the season is always full of promise, but the ability to pick up points when the going gets tough could make or break the race to the Shield.

The 2025 WNBA Draft tips off tonight, with experts across women’s basketball predicting the results as this year’s sure-thing No. 1 begets question marks down the line.

  • Barring any huge turns, the Dallas Wings are set to take UConn star Paige Bueckers first, ushering in a new era of Texas basketball.

Big picture: The rest of the lottery remains more of a mystery, with a lesser-known name now projected to shake things up early.

  • Mock drafts from ESPN and The Athletic have the Seattle Storm selecting 19-year-old French center Dominique Malonga second, pivoting away from the NCAA-to-WNBA pipeline.

Playing the field: Opinions differ after the top two picks, as the guard-heavy field could see squads strategizing around factors like team-fit and overall talent.

  • Notre Dame guard Sonia Citron, USC forward Kiki Iriafen, and LSU forward Aneesah Morrow are all expected to be drafted early in the first round.

  • Sportsbooks are also weighing in, with FanDuel currently favoring Citron at No. 3 (-140), Iriafen at No. 4 (+170), and Morrow at No. 5 (+105).

China PR pulled out of their June 3rd friendly against the USWNT, US Soccer announced on Friday, with Jamaica set to replace the 2022 Asian Cup winners at Energizer Park in St. Louis.

  • As of now, China is still confirmed to face the USWNT on May 31st in St. Paul, marking the first of the team’s two-game international break.

Big picture: “After initially agreeing to play two matches during the upcoming FIFA window, the Chinese Football Association subsequently informed US Soccer that its Women’s National Team could play only the first match,” USSF said in a release.

  • The federation did not provide an explanation for China’s cancelation, quickly tapping Jamaica as a stand-in to set up the teams’ first meeting in three years.

Unfamiliar foes: Despite sharing a confederation, the US and Jamaica have only squared off six times before, most recently playing to a 5-0 USWNT win at the 2022 Concacaf W Championship.

  • Led by Manchester City striker Khadija “Bunny” Shaw, the Reggae Girlz have qualified for the last two World Cups, advancing to the Round of 16 for the first time ever in 2023.

Local legend: The summer showdown at Energizer Park will also celebrate former USWNT captain Becky Sauerbrunn, with US Soccer calling the recently retired defender “the greatest female player in St. Louis soccer history.”

Chelsea FC kept their quadruple dreams alive this weekend, advancing to the 2025 FA Cup Final with Saturday’s 2-1 semifinal win over Liverpool in their quest to lift four trophies in a single season.

  • The league-leaders dive back into WSL play next week, before battling Manchester United for the FA Cup on May 18th.

Big picture: With the 2025 League Cup already secured, first-year manager Sonia Bompastor’s squad is now gearing up for next weekend’s Champions League semifinal against UWCL powerhouse Barcelona.

  • Chelsea is yet to lose a WSL match this season, holding a six-point lead over London rival Arsenal at the top of the table with just four matchdays left.

  • Should they go on to lock down the 2025 FA Cup, WSL, and UWCL titles, the Blues will be the first UK women’s team to win a quartet since Arsenal’s historic 2007 campaign.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation handed Barcelona star Mapi Leon a two-game suspension on Sunday, after the defender was found guilty of “unsporting conduct” during a February match against Espanyol.

  • While lining up for a set piece in the Liga F derby’s 15th minute, Leon was seen on camera saying something to Espanyol’s Daniela Caracas before appearing to touch her inappropriately, garnering condemnation from Caracas’s club.

Big picture: Leon denies the allegations, with Barcelona unsuccessfully appealing the RFEF’s ruling in her defense.

  • Leon sat out her club’s 6-0 win over Atletico Madrid on Sunday, and is set to serve the second game of her suspension during Barcelona’s midweek matchup with Sevilla — clearing her for next weekend’s UWCL semifinal.
