Texas Tech forces winner-take-all Game 3

The Women’s College World Series is headed to a winner-take-all Game 3, as Texas Tech evened the series with a 4-3 win over Texas behind another gutsy performance from starting pitcher NiJaree Canady.
“NiJa was huge," Texas Tech coach Gerry Glasco said after Game 2. "She went out there and pitched her tail off."
Big picture: After missed execution on an intentional walk gave Texas the 1-0 series lead, Canady once again threw every pitch for the Red Raiders — her fifth straight complete game of the 2025 postseason.
"Obviously [Wednesday] night wasn't my best game. I feel like this game wasn't my best game, either," Canady said, after stifling another late Texas surge. "I was just leaving it out on the field."
Canady is all but assured to take the mound again tonight, with Texas Tech’s championship hopes resting on their $1 million player.
Per ESPN research, Alabama's Jackie Traina was the last pitcher to throw every pitch at the WCWS for a national championship team, achieving the feat in 2012.
Tune in: Game 3 of the Women’s College World Series begins at 8 PM ET tonight, on ESPN.
Chicago aims for history (and revenge)

The Chicago Sky take on the Indiana Fever for the second time this season on Saturday, in a primetime matchup that Chicago hopes will flip the script on their early season struggles.
With Caitlin Clark out, the Sky will look to avenge a 35-point loss to the Fever, while also playing in the historic United Center for the first time in league history.
What to watch: The Sky won’t be the only team looking to make up ground. Only four WNBA teams currently have records above .500, with the rest of the league playing catch-up.
Sparks vs. Wings, Friday at 9:30 PM ET (ION): A three-game losing streak is getting snapped by either Dallas or Los Angeles tonight, though the Wings will still be without No. 1 pick Paige Bueckers.
Sky vs. Fever, Saturday at 8 PM ET (CBS): On a two-game winning streak, the Sky have a chance to even the score against the Fever, playing in the arena that Michael Jordan made famous.
Seattle vs. Phoenix, Saturday at 10 PM ET (League Pass): The 4-4 Storm will attempt to make a statement against a Mercury side that is still finding ways to win, despite a number of sidelined stars.
French Open final: Gauff vs Sabalenka

World No. 2 Coco Gauff earned a place in her third career Grand Slam final on Thursday, ending French wild-card entry Loïs Boisson’s Cinderella story in a dominant 6-1, 6-2 straight set victory.
"This is my first time playing a French player here. I was mentally prepared that [the crowd] was to be 99% for her, so I was trying to block it out," said Gauff.
Big picture: The player standing between Gauff and her second Grand Slam title is none other than World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, who looked at ease taking down four-time French Open champion No. 5 Iga Swiatek in the tournament’s other semifinal.
Roland Garros is the third straight Grand Slam in which Sabalenka has reached the final, with six appearances in WTA title matches in 2025 alone.
Sabalenka and Gauff have an even head-to-head record at 5-5, with Gauff notably getting the best of Sabalenka to win the US Open in 2023, but the World No. 1 has the recent edge.
Sabalenka has defeated Gauff in three of their last four meetings, including their most recent battle on clay in the final of the Madrid Open in May.
Tune in: Catch the final of the French Open on Saturday on TNT, time TBD.

As the NWSL returns from the international break, powerhouse clubs below the playoff line prepare for a midseason push that could make or break their season.
Currently sitting in ninth place, Gotham FC are hoping for a huge addition to their gameday roster, as star midfielder Rose Lavelle could make her 2025 debut this weekend.
What to watch: The Bats will have their work cut out for them, as they take on No. 1 Kansas City on Saturday at 1 PM ET (CBS).
No. 10 North Carolina will also hope to jumpstart a postseason run, as they battle No. 4 Washington on Sunday at 4 PM ET (Paramount+).
NWSL changes rules, allowing intra-league loans

The NWSL outlined new rules for expansion roster building and intra-league trades on Thursday, as two new franchises prepare to enter the league in 2026 without the benefit of an expansion draft.
Boston Legacy FC and NWSL Denver will have access to over $1 million in allocation funds to spend on players beginning on July 1st, to be used through 2027.
Both teams can also sign players without a cap hit until the secondary transfer window in 2025, providing players can be loaned out, put on SEI designation, or acquired with allocation money buy-down towards the salary cap.
A new era: All NWSL teams can also now participate in intra-league loan deals, with no more than 12 players either in or out on loan at a time.
