Fever settles the score in Phoenix

The Fever cooled the feud last night, as Kelsey Mitchell’s 29 points lifted No. 7 Indiana over No. 12 Phoenix 92-89 — capping a regular-season series that dominated headlines beyond the sports page.
Aliyah Boston added 21 points after sitting out the Fever’s loss to No. 9 LA, while Alyssa Thomas and Kahleah Copper paced the Mercury with 22 each.
Fever star Caitlin Clark rested a lingering back injury on the bench, while tensions around Thomas’s June 24th flagrant foul appeared to remain at bay. (Watch full highlights)
Flagrant fallout: Last month’s incident did escalate off the court, as 11 Republican lawmakers sent a letter to WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert demanding “accountability” for “repeated acts of physical violence” against Clark.
Led by Texas’s August Pfluger, the letter warns that the league could face governmental scrutiny over civil rights violations, giving Engelbert until July 24th to respond to questions about officiating, player action, and harassment protections.
Indiana said neither the team nor Clark spoke with the committee or knew about the letter, reiterating that safety remains its priority. (See full report)
Up next: Phoenix now gears up to face No. 1 Las Vegas tomorrow at 6 PM ET (Peacock), before Indiana has a go at the Aces on Sunday at 9 PM ET (NBC).
Seattle looks to spoil Portland’s form

The Cascadia Clash returns on Sunday, with No. 11 Seattle hosting surging No. 2 Portland as both sides ramp up their returns from the NWSL’s summer break.
The Thorns (8-3-3) enter on a hot streak, thumping No. 16 Louisville 4-0 behind Pietra Tordin’s goal and two assists last weekend, while Jayden Perry, Reilyn Turner, and Sophia Wilson — who notched her 50th league goal — also found the back of the net. (Watch full highlights)
The Reign (4-6-2) stumbled in their first match back, dropping a 3-1 decision to No. 6 North Carolina despite Sally Menti’s early opener. (Watch full highlights)
Head-to-head: The pair last met on March 20th, with Portland shutting out Seattle 2-0 off a one-goal, one-assist night from Pietra Tordin.
Mackenzie Arnold posted her sixth clean sheet on Sunday, underscoring the gap between the regional rivals as the Thorns chase the top of the table and the Reign shoots to make up ground in the season’s second half.
“I know our team is going to bounce back from this and learn everything we can,” Reign midfielder Sally Menti said after last weekend’s loss. “We’ve got to move forward.” (See full standings)

Wimbledon will have a Czech champion, as Linda Nosková and Karolína Muchová booked an all-Czech 2026 final after Muchová ended US star Coco Gauff’s title bid yesterday.
Muchová edged Gauff 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (12-10), taking the three-set semifinal on a 10-point super tiebreak and derailing the world No. 7’s quest to reach her first-ever All England Club final.
“I have so much respect for how [Muchová] plays and how she is off-court,” Gauff said afterwards. “It sucks to be on the losing end, but walking off the court I was like, ‘That was a lot of fun.’” (Watch full highlights)
Familiar foes: 21-year-old Nosková outclassed Marta Kostyuk 6-4, 6-4 in Thursday’s second showdown, snapping Kostyuk’s 21-of-22 match run to reach her first major final just weeks after winning the Berlin Tennis Open.
The winner will join Czech greats Jana Novotná, Petra Kvitová, Markéta Vondroušová, and Barbora Krejčíková as recent Wimbledon champions.
“One thing I do remember is when Petra Kvitová won here,” Nosková said in London. “This was maybe one of the first moments when I realized a sport such as tennis exists. I’m still in shock that I had the chance to play on this court.”
Tune in: Nosková takes on Muchová on Saturday at 11 AM ET, live on ESPN.
